The Certificate Program for Strings is a graded examination program in eleven levels for string students in violin, viola, cello, and bass (harp and guitar in the near future) that measures technical progress and musical development. The program has been offered in Virginia since 2002, first in Fairfax, and in 2006, in Richmond. The eleven levels in the form of a graded list of studio materials can be found in ASTA’s The Certificate Program for Strings Handbook, available from ASTA at www.astaweb.com or by contacting the National Office at 703-279-2113.
The Certificate Program for Northern Virginia will be held this year at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, on May 10, 2008.
The Certificate Program for the Richmond area will be held at Godwin High School on June 7, 2008.
The program works this way: Over several months, studio teachers prepare one or more pieces, scales, an etude, and hone sight-reading skills. The prepared materials are performed at a once-yearly exam before an examiner who offers reinforcing and constructive written comments. Upon successful completion of the exam, the student is awarded a Certificate of Achievement by ASTA. The examiners are usually VASTA members known for their fine, supportive teaching skills and professional experience.
Teachers like their students to participate because they feel that the work that goes into preparation and the feedback from an outside source are invaluable to each student. Opportunities such as these examinations provide a goal to strive for and an occasion for every student to shine in a noncompetitive environment. They also lead to more success at youth orchestra auditions, college auditions, festivals, and recitals. The certificates are a source of pride for the student, and they are transportable to other locations as a reflection of what the student has achieved.
